How is Luz portrayed in comparison with Jig?

In Hemingway’s short story “A Very Short Story” Luz is very different to Jig in “Hills Like White Elephants”. Luz is a strong, more mature woman, who is following her own will. She seems to be independent and is able to decide for herself without asking anybody. She breaks up with her boyfriend all of a sudden to the surprised reader. Luz takes the action, although there is obviously nothing she worries about him. Luz was supposed to follow him. Maybe it is just the fact that she does not want to follow anybody.

Jig is a girl, who is inexperienced, very young, and mentally dependent on her boyfriend. She is in a conflict about having an abortion or getting the baby, without a final solution yet. She is asking many questions. She probably follows the man at the end of the story, even though she has doubts about his real feelings towards her.

Luz cares about people: she is a nurse and she writes many letters to her boyfriend, who is at the front, telling him, that she loves and misses him so much. Later on when she has broken up with him, she tries to comfort him and takes all the blame. Jig, I assume, was never in a situation to support somebody mentally. I can only imagine her receiving this kind of encouragement from a strong person.

Luz does not mind to come into conflict: on her boyfriend’s way home, she starts to argue with him. Jig seems to avoid conflicts: when her boyfriend begins to speak about the operation, she looks away.

At the end of the story, Luz has been driving her former boyfriend crazy and has been putting her present boyfriend to flight. I doubt, whether Jig’s boyfriend ends like this.

  2. That was a very interesting comparative analysis, Sabine! (By the way, when writing on the internet in English, we should avoid using indenting paragraphs.)
